Bill Status
The Tennessee Interior Design Act of 2009 was introduced in the 106th General Assembly on February 25th, 2009.
In the Senate: Our senate sponsor - and the senate - wants to put a stop to the confusion and misinformation on the Hill. The Senate Commerce Committee has called for our local opposition groups to come to the negotiation table with us and work out practice language that they can support. The mandate is to come to the table to produce a consensus bill for consideration by January 2010, one that all the groups can support.
This is a significant victory!
We have worked very hard in the past to be sure our bill is sensitive to the needs of everyone and look forward to working with others to improve our bill even more. We would be pleased to produce, along with AIA, NKBA, IDPC, and the engineering societies, a joint bill by January 2010 for introduction and passage by the legislature.
Should one or all of these groups be unwilling negotiate, it will be clear to the senate that our opposition has no interest in participating.
Thank you for contacting your legislators and telling them how this bill affects you and your work. Thanks to you and your efforts, our campaign to pass meaningful practice legislation is one big step nearer our goal.
In the House of Representatives: HB 2016 has been assigned to the Industrial Subcommittee of the House of Commerce Committee. The bill has not yet been placed on the Committee Calendar.

Description
This bill not only will license and regulate the practice of interior design but also will safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the public by limiting interior design of large, commercial spaces and high risk occupancies to only those design professionals who are qualified by the State.
