EDUCATION

Completing a degree in interior design is an essential element to the professional practice of interior design. The Tennessee Interior Design Consumer Protection Act strongly encourages interior designers to have a Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly known as FIDER) accredited postsecondary degree. The most expedient path to licensing is through an accredited degree program (or their degree program must have been offered by an institution located in Tennessee on April 16, 1991). Additionally, the degree program must be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) or be licensed by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. For those registrants who have an out-of state degree or a degree from a non-accredited interior design program which meets specific requirements for number of credit hours of interior design specific coursework, there is an alternate path to licensing which requires additional diverse and appropriate work experience.

The Act also requires licensed interior designers to complete continuing education requirements in order maintain their active license status.
